| There was a thread dedicated to the Folk Fest this year, but I cannot seem to find it. Anyways, WUML is doing what they do every year for the Folk Fest and Folk Director Greg Ragnio is running the show. So you can probably assume that whatever you did last year for the Folk Fest holds the same for this year and if you have any questions you can call Greg at 978 886 4920 |

I just spoke with Greg, and he says that the person who normally does the wiring for our connection at Boardinghouse Park is away on assignment in the National Guard. We'll just have to wait until tomorrow morning and see if a connection can be established. There may also be recordings made for broadcast at a later time. There will definitely be a WUML table a Boardinghouse Park, where Community and Student DJs will be welcome to volunteer to help out and/or spend some time meeting the public.
If there is live broadcasting from the Park, programming will be pre-empted from noon to 8:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday, but if a connection can't be arranged, the weekend hosts should be prepared to do their shows as usual. We can't say anything with more certainty until tomorrow morning, but please check the Folk Festival thread under "Programming" on this forum for further updates from Greg. |

| There is another topic for this in programming. I have been talking to Phil from the Lowell National Parks for the past few months and recently they have run into some trouble with providing us with a phone line. I talked to him today again and he said it still wasn't looking good. Part of the problem I guess is that the building that they normally run the line from has changed to VOIP from the regular phone service that they were using before. He also said there is a small chance that they will be able to run a line from somewhere else tomorrow morning. Me and Angus are going to be heading over there early tomorrow to see if we can get this to work out. Either way we will be at the folk festival with a table to talk to people. |

WAIT! I can get you on the air. It won't be pretty but I CAN GET YOU ON THE AIR!!! Please let me know if you're still unable to get a phone line, that is NOT an issue! You absolutely need a feed from their air board however, without that...yes, you're screwed. But IF you can get a line-in from the board, I WILL GET YOU ON THE AIR!
I can set up a mixing board, route you through my laptop and stream you over the internet. We can bring up the stream over on the station computer and broadcast that! It's EASY PEASY!
So yeah, if you're still having trouble getting a phone line in them morning, find out of you can get the line-in feed from the board and then CALL ME! I'll be down to hook you guys up with an on-air capability.
I put my phone number in the ICQ button down below. _________________ -Dashing Dashboard Dave Often "The Big O"

I tried to get an audio stream running over a tethered laptop, I was able to do this successfully last year, but the ports are now being blocked so there's no connectivity....so my idea is out the window. If you are able to get up and running, please let us all know! _________________ -Dashing Dashboard Dave Often "The Big O"

You guys got a raw deal, no two ways about it. First, you've been there since 1987 and were the first station there to broadcast the show that year. Second, you've had increasing problems getting on air over the past 5 years or so (getting feeds from the board and/or networking connectivity). Last, the BS excuse they gave this year (you can't use the phone lines because the building is a Federal Building???? So GBH can use it and you can't???) seems like an excuse from people who had no idea what they were doing.
Getting a feed from the board is all about finesse. Show up looking like a radio station, set up radio station broadcasting equipment, approach the techs at the air board and dollars to donuts they'll just hand you the cable and go about their hectic day. Sometimes you'll get Mr. Territorial Tech and have to beg, but begging works and I'm not ashamed to admit I've begged in the past.
Getting networking is going to be a WUML only deal moving forward. This year won't be an exception. If that really is a "Federal" building, with all the new anti-terrorist legislation and FCC changes going on, you can never depend on a phone line again. My generation and earlier never had the phone telecommunications you guys enjoy, we only had the microwave transmitter to the remote receivers on top of FOX. If that equipment still exists, get trained on it and depend on it. If it doesn't, time to find replacements and get them installed ASAP.
I'm so sorry there wasn't more help available today. You still get an A for effort though. Rock on. _________________ -Dashing Dashboard Dave Often "The Big O"

1. The Center for Lowell History in the Boarding House building is a U Mass Lowell "Center", so even if the building is federal property, we should have the same right to use an extension in that center as we do in any other UML building. We did use one of those extensions one year.
2. Long ago, the Marti (?) remote used to transmit to a receiver on top of Fox Hall. I remember there was no problem transmitting continuously from anywhere downtown. I walked with the WJUL folks who broadcast from Merrimack Street, from Market Street, from the parade route and from South Common in 1987. There was some arrangement to relay the signal from Fox Hall to Lydon, but a few years ago, the unit on Fox Hall was removed. After that, we were able to transmit directly from Kennedy Plaza to the roof of Lydon, where the remaining receiver was located, but from Boarding House Park, the connection was intermittent. We could try doing it again, but the quality was low the last time we tried it.

| I ended up having a few choice words with Jon. So if that comes around to backlash on anyone, then sorry about that. He was being a dick though. |
